Looking back on 2011

Dear Friend and Member

We have had a particularly busy 2011 and this culminated on 19th December with the Outward Bound Monaco Annual Awards Ceremony at the Club des Residents Etrangers a Monaco, perhaps better known to most of us as the CREM.

We were honoured to welcome HSH Prince Albert II who very kindly agreed to take time out of his very busy schedule to join us to celebrate the achievements of a special group of  27 young persons who completed the OB courses during 2011 and to present their Certificates. Very many congratulations to them all.

It doesn’t seem 8 years since HSH Prince Albert and HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York decided it would be a good idea to set up a Monaco version of the Outward Bound UK charity aboard Sir Donald Gosling’s yacht Leander. In those years we have come a long way with young persons now having the opportunity to attend courses both in the UK and on the Cote d’Azur. At present, it is the Monaco courses which are taking up most of my own and the committee’s time as we plan to enhance our offering so we can provide full 3 week courses in this area in the not too distant future.

We could not have achieved all this without the unfailing commitment of His Serene Highness, as not only does he give up time to present certificates and to meet the young people and their parents on evenings like that at the CREM, but he is heavily involved in our other activities including for example, planting trees in the mountains, and giving generous support  to our fund raising events both here and in the UK.  On behalf of all those involved in OB Monaco I gave him our grateful thanks.

Fund raising is clearly a key element in the activities of any charity and if you are not a member, or have not renewed for 2012, we have attached a membership form to be completed and returned to Vanessa Ilsley.

One fund raising event held this year was a charity evening to coincide with the Fete de la Musique in June. This was organized by Howard Walker and Tony Beaumont  at Le Cabanon in Cap d’Ail and Tony and Howard took the opportunity to present His Serene Highness with a cheque for Euros 20,000  in favour of Outward Bound Monaco. We are immensely grateful for this donation.

It finally remains for me to wish you, and your respective families, a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Kind Regards

Rob

Outward Bound Invitation Courses 2011

Dear Friend and Member,

Outward Bound Monaco is holding its 4th annual local based course at the end of October, from 26th  to 30th.   The first four days have been organised by OB UK and involves the usual format of rowing, walking etc.  The last day, Sunday 30th October, will be organised by Be Fit Monaco, a new personal training centre in Monaco.  They have offered to organise a few events along the lines of the very popular World’s Strongest Man Competition involving  tyre flipping, sled dragging, farmers walks and car push.

The 8 students participating in the OB course will be joined by another 8 students from this year’s summer UK course so that there will be a very competitive event.

I have pleasure in inviting members, families and friends to join us at this event to give support to the young people and have a chance to talk to them about what they have been doing.

The event will take place near Le Cabanon restaurant at la Pointe Douaniers from 10am until 1pm.

Following the event and finals, a barbecue lunch has been organised at the restaurant for all the participants and their families. Members who want to stay on for the lunch are most welcome. The price for the lunch is 30 euros inclusive of wine.

I hope to see you on the day.

Best regards,

Rob Rutter
President

2011 Outward Bound UK Summer Courses Report

Outward Bound Monaco sent 35 students split in 4 groups and 2 locations, Ullswater in the English Lake District and Aberdovey in Wales.

Before the summer courses started Nick Dawson, the course director from Outward Bound Aberdovey, visited Monaco to meet all our participants . We have done this for few years now and it has been very positive for the students to talk about their commitment to finish the course.

In General both OB centers have been particular helpful this year. All course duty instructors have been regularly in touch with myself to report on the well being of our Students. We have sent a lot of young people this year and we can be happy with the result.

I must say this year our young people had a great time, I keep on receiving thank you e-mails, some examples are below;

"Dear Diane ,

I would like to take this chance to thank you .

I had the best time of my life on the outward bound course . Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be part of this year's outward bound,

I would love to be part of next years team , if you would have me !!

UK Summer Courses 2010

We have just completed our annual debriefing following another successful summer in the UK where 28 local youth set out for the OB centres in Ullswater and Aberdovey to undertake the 3 week classic course. This is the ultimate life-changing challenge for our teenagers and not everyone manages to complete the full course but those who do can feel very proud of their accomplishment.

This year we had 23 successful "graduates" who proved not just to others but more importantly to themselves that "we are all better than we know".

They left as themselves and returned more than themselves. We are counting on them to encourage others to try the Outward Bound experience.

If you would like an opportunity to step up to this challenge and enrol on a course please contact Diane on: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Judy receives a donation from the IOD on behalf of Outward Bound Monaco

In her capacity as General Secretary of Outward Bound Monaco, Judy was delighted to attend the pre Christmas lunch of the Monaco branch of the IOD held at the Saint Bênoit restaurant in Monaco and receive a cheque for 4000 euros on behalf of Outward Bound Monaco.

Said Judy; “It was a wonderful initiative on behalf of the IOD, that this year, instead of engaging a speaker for the lunch, they chose to make a charitable donation. Their members are at the very heart of the mechanics of the current economy and know only too well how hard businesses and charities alike have been hit. This will enable Outward Bound to continue its mission to help young people reach their full potential both locally and in the UK in what are very challenging times.”

The Outward Bound Trust UK

Outward Bound TrustThe Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity and the umbrella body for the separate Outward Bound Trust organisations, including, Outward Bound Metro.

We raise money through the activities of our fundraising arm, The Patron's Company, from donations and through our nationwide network of The Outward Bound Trust's Associations. We use that money to help as many young people as possible to have access to safe, adventurous experiences through which they can raise their self-esteem, realise their full potential and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Our belief

"We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never be prepared to settle for anything less."

KURT HAHN, Co-founder of The Outward Bound Trust

The Outward Bound Trust exists to turn these words into reality for an ever-increasing number of young people.

Class of 2009 Reception with Scotland International Rugby Union Player Ross Beattie

On 4th November 2010 Outward Bound Monaco held its annual ‘graduation’ ceremony for the Class of 2009 at the Meridian Beach Plaza Hotel.

24 Outward Bounders attended with their parents and relatives and met with committee members, Outward Bound members and local VIPs. There was great excitement amongst the young people when guest of honour Scotland International Rugby hero Ross Beatie arrived to present the certificates.Ross who has been engaged by Nice rugby club met the young people and chatted to them about the challenges they had faced on their Outward Bound courses. In his speech he said that he had been blessed by having a supportive family to help him through the tough times but he said he would have really appreciated having an organisation like Outward Bound to give him a good grounding in how to increase your self esteem and reach your full potential.
