Our mission

To unlock the potential in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild.

Our core values

A belief that we all have undiscovered potential - we aim to create moments when everyone can see and believe in themselves as never before and to translate such moments into lessons for everyday life.

A belief in the power and magic of learning through adventure in the wild - as a means of bringing out the best in people.

A deep appreciation of the balance between risk, reward and responsibility - we want people to have intense experiences with real consequences and powerful, positive and memorable outcomes.

A spirit of respect and compassion - we aim to stretch people both physically and mentally. In doing so we act with care, concern and generosity towards people and the natural environment.

Our new strategic plan, Arriving Where We Started (pdf), re-defines our purpose and values as a charity and sets a challenging agenda for the future.

Kurt Hahn founder of Outward BoundOur history

The Outward Bound Trust was founded in 1941 by Lawrence Holt, Chairman of the Blue Funnel Shipping Line, and the renowned educationalist Kurt Hahn. It was intended as a survival school for merchant seamen who might find themselves shipwrecked and forced to cope with all manner of situations and conditions in any environment in the world.

After the war, it was felt by many that the success of the school was in more than just teaching survival skills. The Outward Bound programme could also, in peacetime, be a valuable means of making individuals more independent, self aware and able to cope for themselves. The lessons learned have, from the start, been applied to teamwork and leadership.

Outward Bound Generations

Over a million people have now benefited from the life lessons and survival skills of The Outward Bound Trust and the lessons learned are as valuable and relevant today as they were all those years ago. Aware of the importance of such memories and skills gained by participants since 1941, The Trust has launched 'Outward Bound Generations'. The Launch of the Outward Bound Monaco Association

In October 2003, Sir Donald Gosling hosted a gala dinner in aid of Outward Bound UK on board his yacht Leander, with both H.R.H. The Duke of York and the then H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert of Monaco in attendance. That evening the Duke launched a challenge to his fellow Prince: the setting up of Outward Bound Monaco! With his keenness and enthusiasm for helping young people, Prince Albert rose to the challenge and the idea for OB Monaco Association was born.

On 5th November 2004 we became a fully registered Monaco charity association. Our first aim is to sponsor young people educated in the Principality to attend a UK based Outward Bound course in 2005. However our greatest challenge and ultimate objective is to set up an adventure camp in and around Monaco to bring together and benefit young people both from the UK and Monaco in a new, challenging Monegasque Outward Bound experience.

To enable us to make our aims a reality, we need funds and this is where our sponsors and supporters can help. In October 2004 we hosted a spectacular dinner and operatic arias at the Port Palace hotel in Monaco attended by both H.S.H. Prince Albert and guest of honour, H.R.H. Prince Konstantin of Bulgaria.

Since then we have benefited from fund raising events which were hosted by The Duke of York at Windsor Castle and St. James Palace. H.S.H Prince Albert has hosted two royal dinners with guest H.R.H. The Duke of York at the Monaco Palace, all generously sponsored by our benefactors. This wonderful and unique partnership between our two Patron Princes is something that is very special to Outward Bound and provides an opportunity for bespoke, exceptional fund raising evenings that benefit both the charity and its benefactors.
